4-on-4-off, explained

How the eight-day cycle works, why it drifts through the calendar, and the trick for working out which days you are on months ahead.

Four days on, four days off. One of the simplest rotations to describe and one of the most confusing to live alongside.

The shape

Four consecutive shifts, then four consecutive days off, repeating. Shifts are usually 12 hours — often four days, then four off, then four nights, then four off, giving a sixteen-day full cycle if time-of-day rotates too.

Averages 42 hours a week over the cycle, which is why it is popular in operations that run continuously: four crews cover every hour with no gaps and no overtime built in.

Why it drifts

Here is the whole problem in one line: eight does not divide into seven.

Start a block on a Monday and your next block starts on the following Tuesday. The one after that starts Wednesday. Your working days advance by one weekday each cycle, so it takes eight cycles — 56 days — to return to the same weekday alignment.

Practical consequence: over any two-month period you will work every day of the week roughly equally. There is no such thing as “your Saturday”. Some blocks eat both weekend days, some miss them entirely, and it is impossible to say which without counting.

The counting trick

If you need to work out whether a date is on or off without a calendar:

  1. Take a date you know you were on, and the day number of the block (1 to 4).
  2. Count the days between that date and the one you want.
  3. Divide by 8 and take the remainder.
  4. Add the remainder to your starting block position. If the result lands 1–4 you are on; 5–8 you are off.

Example: you were on day 1 of a block on 3 August. Is 24 September a working day? That is 52 days later. 52 ÷ 8 = 6 remainder 4. Day 1 + 4 = day 5, which is the first day off. So no.

This works, and nobody does it. Which is the point of the next section.

Why explaining it to family does not help

People assume that if they explain the pattern clearly enough, family will stop asking. It never happens, and the arithmetic above is why.

Understanding the pattern and being able to answer a question are different tasks. Somebody who fully understands 4-on-4-off still has to do modular arithmetic from a reference date to tell you whether you are working on the 14th. Nobody is doing that in their head while making a dinner plan.

So the fridge diagram does not reduce the questions. Only the actual dates do — which means the useful thing is not explaining the cycle but generating it forward, so the answer is looked at rather than worked out. Most calendar tools cannot do this, because recurring events assume a seven-day week; an app that understands non-weekly cycles can set it once and produce the days indefinitely.

Living with it

The good. Four consecutive days off, every eight days, is a genuine block — long enough for a trip, a project, or actual rest, in a way two days is not. Over a year you get more consecutive time off than a standard week gives.

The bad. You will miss weekends unpredictably, which affects anything running on a weekly rhythm — a Sunday league, a Tuesday class, a regular family lunch. Anything weekly will be missed roughly half the time, and shift workers on this pattern often quietly drop such commitments rather than keep failing to attend.

The workaround. Look for things that recur within your four-day blocks rather than weekly. A standing arrangement anchored to your days off, rather than to a weekday, is one of the few things that survives this rotation.

Nights. If the pattern includes a nights block, the first off-day after it is recovery rather than leisure. Family calendars that show “off” for all four give a misleading picture; it is usually three and a half.
